Beckdale fulfilment warehouse

Executive summary

Beckdale's fulfilment proposition is intentionally narrow and efficient. By standardising around a single-item pick workflow — the 45p base pick — using inexpensive poly mail bags, and integrating directly with leading ecommerce platforms, we reduce handling time, simplify stock management and pass the savings back to merchants. Storage is priced from £21/week for a racking shelf and postage is charged at cost (for example, around £0.88 for 2nd class small items or about £2.36 for a Tracked Large Letter). The service is aimed at merchants who can keep their SKU assortment compact enough to be stored on a single shelf — making picking fast and cheap.

What is the 45p base pick model?

Put simply: each order that requires picking a single SKU from the racking shelf is charged a flat base fee of £0.45. That charge covers the labour to find the SKU, remove it from its location, add it to a poly mail bag and generate the shipping label. The rest of the order cost is transparent: postage at cost and the cost of the mail bag (often a few pence per unit).

Why this works: when a merchant's full week's SKUs fit on one racking shelf, picks are localised, walking time is minimised and packing is standardised — enabling the low base fee without sacrificing accuracy.

Detailed cost components

Below are the typical cost elements you should consider when modelling your fulfilment spend with Beckdale. All figures are illustrative; exact postage costs depend on carrier and service level chosen.

  • Base pick: £0.45 per single-item order.
  • Packaging: poly mail bag starting at a few pence per bag (bulk discounts available).
  • Postage (example UK rates): approximately £0.88 for 2nd class small items; approximately £2.36 for a Tracked Large Letter — actual cost will be charged at the carrier rate used.
  • Storage: a single racking shelf at £21/week. Use less shelf space and pay less — storage is pro rata.
  • Integration & tech: setup for Shopify, WooCommerce or Magento included; minimal onboarding. No ongoing management fee and no lock-in contract.

Example arithmetic: a typical single-item order sent 2nd class may cost roughly £1.38 in total before VAT (45p pick + 5p bag + 88p postage). Opting for tracked services raises postage but adds consumer confidence and potentially lowers disputes and chargebacks.

Operational flow & integration

From a merchant perspective the operation is intentionally simple. Our integration layer maps your store SKUs to the Beckdale pick locations once, allowing orders to flow in automatically. Key features:

  • Shopify — native API or app-level integration to sync orders, inventory and tracking updates.
  • WooCommerce — plugin or REST API integration with automatic status updates and stock levels.
  • Magento — enterprise-level API connection for larger or more complex catalogues.

Order lifecycle: order placed on store ? order routed to Beckdale ? pick queued and processed from the single racking shelf ? poly mail bagged and labelled ? tracking (if used) returned to the store ? dispatch via chosen carrier. The technological aim is to reduce manual handoffs and errors while keeping the merchant fully informed via their platform’s native order tracking.

Who should consider this model?

The Beckdale 45p model is not a one-size-fits-all solution — it is targeted. It suits merchants who:

  1. Can keep stock breadth narrow enough that a week's SKU mix fits on a single racking shelf (this is the core operational assumption).
  2. Have a large share of single-item orders or subscription-style sales where one SKU is picked per order.
  3. Prefer simplicity and predictable unit economics over bespoke fulfilment services (no kitting, limited multi-item picks).
  4. Use ecommerce platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce or Magento and want direct integration.

The offer scales — we can serve larger merchants and create bespoke pricing for higher throughput. For the very lowest headline costs we recommend volumes approaching ~10,000 orders per month, but we welcome and support merchants starting at 100+ orders per month.

Practical examples & scenarios

To make the model concrete, here are three short scenarios:

Example A — Small DTC brand

Small clothing brand sells single-item accessories. Most orders are one SKU. With a week's SKUs on one shelf the brand pays 45p pick + 5p bag + 88p postage = ~£1.38 per order. Storage cost per week is £21 for the shelf — marginal for volume and easy to forecast.

Example B — Subscription seller

Subscription box with a single SKU variant per week. Orders are repetitive and predictable; automation reduces errors, tracked postage reduces customer service load and the merchant benefits from low, predictable pick fees.

Example C — Scaling merchant

A merchant growing rapidly beyond single-item orders. Beckdale can provide transitional pricing and advise on when to move to multi-shelf pick zones or a bespoke kitting arrangement — the 45p model is an efficient entry point and an easy baseline for comparative costing.

Limitations & things to watch

The streamlined structure has sensible constraints. Before committing, evaluate:

  • Catalogue complexity — multi-item orders will materially raise handling time and cost.
  • Special handling — fragile, perishable or age-restricted goods may require bespoke processes or additional fees.
  • Space usage — if you need more than one racking shelf your storage cost will scale accordingly.
  • Volume expectation — the fairest, lowest rates assume steady, predictable volumes; variable micro-volumes can be accommodated but have different marginal economics.

If your operation requires more complexity, Beckdale can prepare a tailored proposal outside the 45p base-pick framework.

How to get started

Ready to evaluate Beckdale for your fulfilment needs? Follow this quick-start checklist:

  1. Confirm a week's SKU assortment can fit on a single racking shelf (we can advise by catalogue review).
  2. Decide the postage service you want to offer customers (2nd class vs tracked services).
  3. Connect your ecommerce platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento).
  4. Send a sample order flow for a short trial period (no contract required) to validate integration and SLAs.

Because there are no management fees or long contracts, onboarding is straightforward. For bespoke volume pricing (for example, reductions when you exceed 10,000 orders/month), contact us and mention “45p base pick” to speed the quote process.
